9-11 Never Forget 9-11 Never Forget Show Transcript CBS News update I'm Nikki young 2 airplanes crashed into both towers of New York City's World Trade Center within minutes of each other leaving gaping holes Flames licking up the sides of the 110 story buildings and thick black smoke billowing into the air my experience and anybody who you talked to who is alive to area can tell you where they were at 911 my wife and I had just moved to to our new house a week before and we were on our treadmills watching the news getting ready to go to school we're both teachers and we saw the second plane crash into the building on September 11th I know exactly where I was of um I was at home getting ready for work and I'm getting a message from my mom who was out of state at the time of business saying hey something's going on uh something crazy is going on put on the news um and she ended up not even all of course all flights were suspended she couldn't even get home from her trip for a couple of days I woke up the morning like so many did to find out that a single plane had hit uh 1 of the towers and as I was watching TV preparing to go to work um that's when the the realization of um the the larger plane going directly into the second tower and it being a reality on September 11th I remember seeing it on the news before I left to come to work and seeing the first plane crash and I think my mind couldn't comprehend that there were actual people on the flight until I got to school and we were talking about it and then I was like oh my God there's people in there like as I mean as silly as it sounds I think I was just it was accident he couldn't have been on purpose some something just strange happened as they went on and then the other crash happened and it was targeted students were scared I remember students being scared and are we next cuz we're La where do you think they'd hit next it was very scary for some students cuz I had 1 Muslim student in the in my class and we had to have a long stalks in the class about how this was not representative of all Muslims of all Arabs uh and that we're all Americans and we all are family in here throughout the day most students did come to school and and they were asking what had happened because nobody really could make a what the the origin of this terrible tragedy was and the idea of that I was going to get in front of these young adults you know eighth graders that are very intelligent people and um you know I'm sure on my face I'm not really good at hiding my uh expressions of nervousness and um but uh I was told that you know to reassure the students as best I could you know that everything was going to be okay I just remember students looking at me um to see if I was being honest with them I was teaching Elementary School and our Administration very specifically did not want us to talk about it or share it with students and I honestly don't even remember kids talking about it or or any discussion happening it was pretty intense to walk into that classroom and I didn't want it to affect the kids cuz I didn't want them to be part of that I didn't want to be with a bunch of frightened 8-year-olds the rest of the day so that's kind of selfish on my part um my daughter's classroom uh she was a fourth grader at the time they kept watching it they had the TV on in their classroom so she spent the day watching those buildings knowing that her dad was in New York or thinking it was cuz she didn't know cuz we have a cell phone and his ship had docked there um so I wonder what that was like for you know being a 5 year old I had no idea exactly what was going on um but then it wasn't until my brother and I were brought to the TV that and we we were seeing what was happening and then literally moments later he saw the North Tower collapsed life and what's crazy is that I still see that image whenever I think about 911 especially on the day 911 I still see that image there are certain that will live in your memory that are so shocking kind of like the the Northridge Earthquake was 1 911 is another where you have these dates that you'll never forget and I really hope that students never have any of those experiences but it is important to remember what happens so that we can prevent and be vigilant in the future
